The Philosophy of Soll

சொல் (Word) • Attention Protection • Calm Offline Reading

3 min read

Somewhere along the way, the page stopped being the quietest thing in the room. A book competes now — with a phone that buzzes, a mind that’s used to scrolling, a habit of reading a paragraph and realizing three sentences later that nothing landed. The words were all there. The reading wasn’t.

Most reading apps answered this by digitizing the shelf: import your books, sync your progress, pick a font. Useful, but beside the point. The problem was never where your books live. It’s whether you can actually stay in them.

THE CORE QUESTION

Soll starts from a different question: what would a reading app look like if it took attention as seriously as it takes storage?

That’s where Spotlight and Tunnel and other focus modes come from — not decoration, but an honest response to how easily the eye drifts on a lit screen. It’s why Bionic Reading exists in the app at all, and why playback moves word by word at a pace you choose, rather than assuming everyone reads the same way, at the same speed, in the same state of mind. These aren’t gimmicks bolted onto a file viewer. They’re the actual point.

The name carries the same idea. Soll comes from சொல் — Tamil word for word. Not book, not library, not shelf. Word. Because that’s the real unit of reading: one word, landing, becoming a thought, becoming something that stays with you after the page is closed. Everything else — the library, the highlights, the stats — exists to protect that one small, repeatable moment from everything trying to interrupt it.

This relationship between disciplined reading and lasting retention isn’t a modern invention. Over two millennia ago, the classic Tamil text Thirukkural articulated the foundational standard for what it means to truly absorb knowledge:

திருக்குறள்/THIRUKKURAL
குறள்·391

கற்க கசடறக் கற்பவை கற்றபின்

நிற்க அதற்குத் தக

Transliteration

kaṟka kacaṭaṟak kaṟpavai kaṟṟapiṉ
niṟka ataṟkut taka.

Translation

“Learn thoroughly what should be learnt. And having learnt, stand according to that.”

We’re not trying to build the reading app with the most features. We’re trying to build the one that gets out of the way — quiet enough to disappear, deliberate enough that when you do notice it, it’s because it just helped you finish a sentence you’d read three times before and never quite caught.

A book is patient. It will wait as long as you need. Soll’s only job is to make sure that when you’re finally ready, your attention is too.
